A.J. Grossman: So, what are the best questions to ask a divorce lawyer when you meet with them for a consultation?

Hi, everyone. I’m A.J. Grossman, CEO and Managing Attorney with LeapFrog Divorce. My entire legal career has been dedicated to helping people with divorce and paternity matters. At LeapFrog Divorce, we do divorce better.

Okay, let’s go.

Question number one: Why should I hire you over your competitors?

This question is great because it’s really difficult to distinguish one lawyer from the next. So, the answer to this question will give you some insight into whether this particular lawyer knows enough or has enough experience to be able to formulate a solid answer.

Question number two: Why did you become a lawyer, and why do you practice this kind of law?

This question is also great because it gives you insight into whether this lawyer has a solid “why.” A lawyer with a solid “why” knows exactly why they are practicing beyond, “My parents told me I had to be a doctor or a lawyer, and I can’t stand the sight of blood, so I became a lawyer.”

Question number three: What makes you different from all the other divorce lawyers in this community?

I love this question because, again, it gives you a lot of insight into how much this lawyer knows about their local legal community and their competitors. Their answer might provide you something you find incredibly valuable that you would not have known if you did not ask the question.

Question number four: Do you consider yourself more of a negotiator and dealmaker or a litigator or trial attorney? And why do you think you’re the right kind of lawyer for my particular situation?

Since most cases settle before going to trial, it’s important to know if this lawyer you’re talking to is skilled or even interested in negotiating settlements. If they aren’t, you stand a good chance of your case going to an incredibly expensive trial.

Question number five: What guarantees can you and your firm provide me regarding my case?

This is a fantastic question because most lawyers will not—absolutely will not—guarantee anything, especially in divorce work.

If you ask this question and you get a well-thought-out list of at least a couple of guarantees, you’re talking with a lawyer who knows their business, knows their clients, and knows what customer service is all about.

That’s all for now. I hope this information is helpful for you. If you have any questions or need help, please give me a call or send me an email. I’d be happy to help.

Have a wonderful day.
